MSNBC commentator Chris Matthews should be fired, veteran political expert Roger Stone says.

Stone, a longtime campaign aid who advised Presidents Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and other top GOP figures, explains that as a self-declared Democrat candidate for the U.S. Senate from Pennsylvania, the famously belligerent Matthews cannot be seen as an non-partisan commentator.

"NBC talking head Chris Matthews has confirmed to former Reagan White House speechwriter Peggy Noonan that he will challenge Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter in 2010 because he believes Specter will be too old to be effective," according to Stone.

Writing in his Stonezone.com Web site, Stone fumed, "Chris Matthews may look in the mirror and see a U.S. Senator but I see nothing other than a self important windbag. Matthews, known best for slagging his fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton and his abusive nature with underlings at MSNBC, has also been known to comb his hair for hours before his TV appearances."

But Stone isn't merely decrying Matthews' double role as commentator and Senate hopeful, he says he's going to take steps to stymie the MSNBC talking head's political hopes, saying that he plans to start a new 527 committee called MOUTH, the Movement Opposing Unqualified Talking Heads. The committee will collect, review and organize everything Matthews has said or written in his public career in preparation for television ads introducing the real Chris Matthews to Pennsylvania voters.
